Momentum of Minor Atom Rep Warriors Growing,During 4-Game Weekend

The Stratford Minor Atom Rep Warriors team, sponsored by Holloway Automotive Ltd. had an action packed weekend of hockey. The action started when the Stratford warriors travelled to Burlington Appleby Arena, early Saturday, October 13 for a game against the Bulldogs. With 3:51 left in the first period Piers Murray scored the first Stratford Point with a wrap-around goal. Carter Keating confidently fought off a 1:1 penalty shot near the end of the first period, defending strong and keeping the puck out of the net. Burlington shortly came back to tie the score with 1:24 left in the first period; the score was 1-1. At the end of the second period the score stayed tied 1-1 due to strong players on defence and strong skating by Stratford forwards. Burlington started the third period with a goal. Tyler Jackson did an end to end rush to the net but was kept off the board. Immediately after, a face-off in the Burlington end, Warrior Evan Hughes scored a goal with a quick flick into the corner pocket, tying the game. Unfortunately a goal by Schultz was called off, so the score remained a tie at the end of the third. Stratford warriors happily took the tie adding another point to their season's total.

The Warriors played their second game of the day in Burlington, at 4pm as a "exhibition" match against the Junior Cougars at the Wave Twin Arena. The Cougars are a new team that is vying for a permanent spot in the Alliance alongside the Burlington Bulldogs. Will Pepper scored the first goal at 6:33 in the first period, with the assist given to Caden Ollson. Piers Murray, followed with a second goal at 5:18 assisted by Nate Van Bakel. After a pass from Ezra Wreford, Tyler Jackson rushed the goalie and shot off the post into the net for third goal. With just over a minute left of second period the Cougars got on the scoreboard. Nate Van Bakel responded immediately with a goal at the 38 second mark to make the score 4:1. Jack Bannon had the assist. Stratford players worked as a team in passing and assisting. Goalie Quinn Smith, defended strong between the pipes. During the third period, on a short -handed shift, Evan Hughes netted a wrap around goal, assisted by Tyler Jackson. Owen Blackburn had a sharp shot from the blue line that bounced in off a cougar player to make the final score 6:1. The assist was given to Piers Murray. Stratford Warriors dominated the game and came home with the win!

On Sunday October 14, warriors hosted the St. Thomas Jr. Stars at the RBC arena. For the first two periods the score remained at 0-0. Both sides playing a defensive game, playing out penalty minutes and power plays. Going into the third period there was still no score. Our first goal came off a face-off win, by Nate Van Bakel,  passed back to Reid Morris who shot from the point. That blast from the point put the Warriors on the board. Both teams scuffled it out in front of the net to keep it away from their goalie Carter Keating, but the Stars tied it up with 2:51 left in the third. Unfortunately, St Thomas got a lead when they scored on a power play in the last minute of play. Warriors pulled the goalie to defend with 6 players but the time ran out to tie it back up. Warriors gave it their all until the buzzer. Score remained at 2-1 for the Stars, but the Stratford Minor Rep players showed teamwork and perseverance until the end of the game.

The Minor Atoms will keep the momentum going, as they travel to Woodstock on Monday, October 15, for their final game of their four-game weekend against the Jr. Navy Vets.

Next weekends' game is scheduled to play on Friday Night, October 19, against the Hawks in Cambridge.
