Warriors Show Strength, Determination and Sportsmanship at the Annual Cambridge MD Festival
The Major Atom MD Warriors returned for a second year the Cambridge MD Festival.  Last year the Warriors struggled with their competition. This year the Warriors were ready to step up to the challenge.  On Friday November 9th, the Warriors faced the Thornhill Rebels. The Warriors took the game with a 4-0 win. The first goal of the game was scored by Taten Mikel assisted by Liam Benton.

The second goal late in the first period was scored during a power play by Tayler Cook, assisted by Alex Robinson and Andre Lefebvre. The second period the Thornhill goalie stood strong shutting the Warriors out of the net.  Early in the third, Kieran Johnson scored unassisted. With 0.37 seconds left on the clock Lefebvre scored the last of Stratford’s goals assisted by Robinson.
The next game saw the Warriors facing their regular season opponents the St. Catharines Hurricanes.  The Warriors were slow to start. The first period saw no goal action until the last minute when Joshua Steele got the ball rolling with an unassisted goal.  The beginning of the second Liam Benton set Kieran Johnson up with a pass that Johnson buried in the net. St. Catharine’s quickly answered back with a goal. The Warrior’s knew they couldn’t let their guard down.  Preston Jeffrey quickly reacted and scored unassisted giving Stratford a two goal lead once more. The Hurricanes tried to keep up with Stratford trying everything thing in their power to get by Stratford’s defence. Stratford knew they needed to cover some of the St. Catharine’s players, to shut down any chances their opponents had.  St. Catharines with a shortened bench, quickly showed signs of exhaustion as they entered the third. Stratford was able to capitalize on this in the third knowing they needed to ensure points to move on to Sunday. Taten Mikel scored unassisted the first goal of the period, dangling past many of the Hurricane’s players. Liam Benton sniped a goal past the goaltender assisted by Wesley Patterson.  Benton added his second goal unassisted. The last goal of the game came from Mikel again assisted by Jeffrey’s to bring the score to a 7-1 win! A side note to this game though there were many unassisted goals recorded on the game sheet, there was a huge amount of effort put out by all of Stratford’s players. Even though the numbers are not recorded on the sheet all of the goals were assisted by all the hard work these boys put in!

The Warriors played a second game on Saturday late in the day, facing the Newmarket Redmen.  The Warriors appeared to be way off on their usual game and Newmarket took full advantage of it.  The two lone Stratford goals were scored by Tayler Cook unassisted in the first, and Taten Mikel unassisted in the third to make the game a 9-2 loss.  The boys knew that they needed to rest up and prepare for the game early Sunday morning.

On to the Semi’s picture this, a 8:00 am start in the frigid cold Duncan McIntosh arena.  Fans were bundled up ready to cheer with the numerous layers of clothes and blankets. But that is what it takes to be a true hockey fan, and the Warriors did not disappoint! They showed the fans they were raring to go, even though they too had frozen toes they would not let that get to them!  The Warriors met up with the fierce Brantford 99ers. The 99er’s dominated the first period with three goals. Stratford got on the board in the last few minutes of the first with a goal from Liam Benton, assisted by Andre Lefebvre. After a quick pep talk at the bench Stratford got another goal in the second scored by Lefebvre who was unassisted to bring the score to a close 3-2.  Stratford could see the intensity in Brantford change quickly. The game became very physical as Brantford became frustrated. Brantford managed to score with just under a minute left in the second. Stratford’s Benton answered back with a goal midway through the third, assisted by Taten Mikel. Brantford wanted to secure the win for the Semi’s shutting down Stratford’s many attempts to score.  Brantford added another goal the clinch the win with a final score of 5-3. Brantford was able to move onto the finals and win the tournament. Goaltenders Jake Taylor and Davis Longston shared the net in the tournament each standing strong protecting Stratford’s net.
