Sarnia Silver Stick
Written by Maureen Whitehead.  The Stratford Jr Warriors Midget A team travelled to Sarnia this weekend for the Midget AA International Silver Stick finals and after a perfect 3-0 record in round robin play, lost in the quarterfinals.

On Friday afternoon, the Warriors defeated the Ralston Valley Mustangs (Colorado).   After a scoreless 1st period, and some timely saves in the 2nd period by Stratford goalie Kyle Powers, the Warriors finally took a 1-0 lead late in the period on a goal by Patrick Holloway.  Ben Wyatt assisted.  Callan Ferguson then scored an unassisted power play goal in the 3rd period to give Stratford a 2-0 lead.  However, with three and a half minutes left, the Mustangs cut the lead in half, then continued to press for the equalizer.  Adam Windsor put the game away two minutes later with an empty net goal and the Warriors got the 3-1 win.
Stratford took on the Vaughan Panthers on Friday night in a very physical and hard fought game. Holloway opened the scoring again, after tipping in a Riley Mathieson shot. Holloway scored again to make it 2-0, assisted by Eric Roes. The Warriors took their 2-goal lead into the 2nd period, but the Panthers scored 3 unanswered goals to take the lead.  After Carson Knott made a highlight reel save in the 3rd period, the momentum shifted and the Warriors took control of the game. Tate Gaylor tied the game, with an assist to Roes, then team captain, Noah Rusen-Steele, scored the game winner, assisted by Gaylor and Ferguson.
On Saturday morning, the Warriors faced off against the Howard Huskies (Maryland) and came out with a 3-2 win.  Caleb Musselman scored, 3 minutes into the game, with the only goal of the 1st period, assisted by Luke Gaylor.  Mathieson made it 2-0 in the 2nd, assisted by Carter Musselman, on a perfectly executed 2-on-1.  Windsor put in a rebound off a Jack Whitehead point shot giving Stratford a 3-goal lead heading into the 3rd.  Caelan Trupp also assisted on Windsor’s goal.  The Huskies scored two in the final frame but the Warriors held on to win the game and put themselves first in their pool.
The quarter final game on Saturday, against the Vaughan Panthers again, was an exciting back-and-forth contest but the Panthers came out on top this time.  Carter Musselman scored the only goal of the 1st period, assisted by Rusen-Steele, but Vaughan stormed back with 2 goals early in the 2nd. Luke Gaylor tied it up on the power play then Windsor gave the Warriors the lead, but the Panthers scored at the buzzer to tie the game at the end of the 2nd.  Stratford pulled ahead again with a Mathieson goal but Vaughan knotted the score at 4-4, then scored the game winner with 4 minutes left.  Having a 5-on-3 advantage with a minute on the clock, the Panthers scored again and punched their card to the semis.
The Warriors play host to the Burlington Cougars on Wednesday, January 22 at the Rotary Complex, 7:15pm
