U16 Warriors edge out a win vs. Hamilton
The U16 Warriors, sponsored by the Stratford Fighting Irish of the WOSHL, hosted the Hamilton Huskies in Constellation AA action at the Allman Arena Sunday Jan. 15.
Both teams came out with a strong forecheck which kept most of the action in the neutral zone throughout the first period. Stratford couldn't capitalize on an early power play and gave up a shorthanded goal to the Huskies to find themselves down 0-1 at the first intermission.
The Warriors came out firing in the second and scored their first of the game on the man advantage - Rylan Hall ripping one past the Hamilton penalty kill (A - Ryan McGee). Late in the period the Huskies intercepted a pass at the red line and fooled netminder Henry Tuer on a shot just inside the blue line. The home team answered quickly as Ryan Gansevles found the back of the net to even the game at 2-2 (A - McGee, Carter Petrie). A costly penalty found the Warriors on the PK with a minute left in the second and scored with 27s left to make the game 3-2 Hamilton at the flood.
Five minutes into the third, Dylan Abel slid one past the Hamilton netminder to even the score at 3-3. The Hamilton keeper kept the score even making a few outstanding saves, frustrating the Stratford attack. With just over 7 minutes remaining in the game, Blake Hodgson fired a shot that was tipped up and in by Griffin McGregor to give the Warriors the lead again. The Huskies took a penalty with 2:13 to go and Stratford capitalized 13 seconds later, Rylan Hall passing to Carter Petrie who found Ryan McGee backdoor and smacked it home - Warriors 5, Huskies 3. Hamilton pulled the goalie and managed one past to narrow the lead to 5-4 but that was as close as they'd get. Final Score Stratford 5, Hamilton 4.
