Return to Play - Concussions & Injuries (Stratford Minor Hockey)

PrintReturn to Play - Concussions & Injuries
SMHA takes concussions and other injuries to players very seriously.  Our Return to Play policies are in place to ensure the health and safety of our players.  When a player is injured, Team Trainers will provide the player with the information needed to guide them through the steps to be taken before they will be permitted to return to SMHA ice.  Team Trainers will have these documents in their Trainer Kit... in the event of a concussion or injury, they will be able to provide the player with the necessary documents right away.

These documents are also attached below for reference.  They include the steps that both Trainers and Players need to follow and outline any documents that need to be filled out and/or submitted as part of the process.

The Concussion handouts also include the Return to Play Protocol and an FAQ page regarding Sport Concussion based on Parachute and Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation recommendations and supplied to SMHA by Dr. Trish Van Boekel, MD, CCFP-EM, SEM.  Dr. Van Boekel's office is located in the Stratford Rotary Complex and we encourage any SMHA players who have a suspected or concussion to visit Dr. Van Boekel.  Her contact information is in the package.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your Team Trainer.

CONCUSSIONS
We encourage parents and players to educate themselves as best they can so players can avoid concussions, and if a concussion is sustained, heal quickly.  Below are two educational videos we encourage you to watch.

VIDEO #1:  A short 5 minute video with 12 On-Ice tips to reduce injuries in Hockey, presented by John Tavares and Tessa Bonhomme. These tips are a part of the Parachute's SMART HOCKEY video.

VIDEO #2:  This video by Parachute Smart Hockey, sponsored by Scotiabank, teaches individuals how to prevent, identify, and return to play after a concussion, and provides Canadians with information to support injury prevention on the ice.

Additionally, the Hockey Canada Concussion Tool Box is an excellent educational reference and we encourage everyone to use its resources:
