Martin gets 2, Hopper stops 35 as Warriors beat Sarnia 5 to 1.
The Hishons Custom Tier 1 Warriors defeated the
Sarnia Jr. Sting on Sunday afternoon 5 to 1.
Jared Gould and Ryan Middegaal joined the team which was missing four players to illness and vacation. Although outshot significantly in every period except the final the Warriors made effective use of their chances and had a 2 to 1 lead going into the third period on goals by Ethan Martin and Sam Jeffery with assists going to Cole Meadows (2), Jeffery, and Martin.
Early in the third period Owen Holloway stripped the puck from a Sarnia defenseman at center ice, skated in alone to find the goalie deep in his crease and shot the puck into the top of the net, glove side. After that the game opened up with many opportunities at both ends of the ice. Then with 37 seconds remaining and the Sarnia net empty Meadows passed the puck out of the Warrior zone onto the stick of Martin who easily skated in for the empty netter. From the ensuing faceoff Martin returned the favour and sent Meadows in to beat the Sarnia net minder.
Goalie James Hopper had an excellent outing stopping 35 Sarnia shots and giving up only one goal after a mad scramble which included a fearless face first slide and block by defenseman Haden Frayne.
Hopper makes a glove save as Luke Zorgdrager and Ryan Middegaal protect.
Warriors line up for a faceoff.
