Waterloo Sweeps Home and Home
Stratford Royal Lepage Hiller Realty Minor Peewee Warriors ended up on the short end of the stick twice this week against the first place Waterloo Wolves.
Thursday evening the Warriors came out of the gate strong exerting high pressure in the Waterloo zone but were unable to capitalize on their chances. As the Wolves found their feet, they turned the tables with pressure on the Warriors defense in their own zone that eventually resulted in five Wolves goals. Jared Lesouder scored the lone Stratford goal on the power play finding a rebound off a Cohen Lesouder point shot and burying it high over the goalie with Noah Rusen-Steele chipping in an assist on the play.
Overall, the Warriors competed hard and performed better than the score would indicate in front of Ryan Bell who stopped two breakaways in the game.
Saturday, the Warriors went to Waterloo prepared to turn the tables on their host and again missed two golden opportunities on the powerplay one minute into the game leaving the door ajar for the Wolves to open the scoring early in the second period. The Warriors responded immediately when Mitch LaFay beat his man at the Warrior blue line and went down the wing to fire a low wrist shot past the Wolves goalie. Assists went to Cohen Lesouder who started the play deep in his zone and Noah Rusen-Steele who chipped the puck up the wall to LaFay.
After Waterloo scored to take the lead again, Raymond Horan went to the net and potted a rebound to apparently tie the game late in the second period but the goal was waived off by the officials. The Wolves added a powerplay goal early in the third and an empty netter to beat Stratford 4-1. Carson Knott was steady in goal for Stratford.
Again the Warriors deserved a better fate running into bad bounces, questionable calls and a strong opponent that has set the bar for what it takes to win the Bristol league championship. They will regroup and host the Sarnia Jr. Sting Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season.
