Weekend Wrap Up — Stormy weekend for the Warriors - By Erin Heisz
The Scotiabank Major Peewee Rep Warriors took to the roads on a stormy Friday night to face off against the Kitchener Rangers Blue. Unfortunately with 20 seconds left, the tie game went in the Rangers’ favour. The Waterloo Wolves had the road trip Sunday to the Allman where a fast paced game ended in a 5-5 tie.

Scotiabank Major Peewee Rep Warriors vs Kitchener Rangers Blue

It was a blustery Friday night and the Scotiabank Major Peewee Rep Warriors headed to Kitchener to play the Kitchener Rangers Blue. Liam Parsons made a nice save in net early in the first period. There was a lot of mid ice play. Danny Van Straaten and Ayden Hakkers had a good scoring chance. Luke Heisz was strong on defense.

The second period saw Ethan Pearce with a shot on net. Heisz shot from the point but a Ranger was in good position to block it. The Rangers moved in on an odd man rush to score. Parsons saved the next 2 shots. Warriors got a 4 minute major and the Rangers scored twice on the power play, unheard of for this season as usually the penalty kill has been super solid. Losing 3-0, Kiefer MacNeil jumped into net quickly to give Parsons a chance to strategize with the coaches and to serve as a rallying call from the coaches to all of his teammates. Jared Gould made a slick pass to Jake Heinbuch but then the play got stopped. Wes Duiker got the puck to Van Straaten who deaked through 2 defence and got around the goalie to get us on the board! Parsons came back into net. The period ended with a penalty called on Kitchener.

The third period started with us down 3-1. Hakkers shot on net and pounded his own rebound in! Now only down by one goal with a score of 3-2, the Warriors started to pick up the pace. Owen Holloway got a chance on net after a good forecheck. Warriors got their second penalty of the game and got scored on again. Score was 4-2 and it stayed there during another penalty kill. Gould passed to Van Straaten who rushed down the ice as the penalty ended and sniped it top shelf! The score was 4-3 for the Rangers. Pearce then scored on a backhand off a rebound with assists to Gould and Hakkers! Unexpectedly we had a tie 4-4 game with 2 minutes left. Cole Meadows passed to Heinbuch who almost got us the winning goal! Penalties were called and unfortunately the Rangers scored at the end of the game to squeak out their first win of the season 5-4.

Scotiabank Major Peewee Rep Warriors vs Waterloo Wolves

Pointless in 3 games, each boy was hungry like a wolf for a win! They started with early pressure on the Waterloo net minder with Ethan Pearce getting a shot on net that was baubled by the goalie. Jared Gould had his magical stick out this game and his passes were a thing of beauty. Larry aka Kaden Brame snapped one in off of such a pass to make it 1-0! Zach Richardson was skating fast and working hard to keep the puck in the offensive end. Kiefer MacNeil in net made a fancy save off his pads. Sam Jeffrey was moving the puck well and glided through 3 Wolves to set up a play. With 8.7 seconds left the Wolves tied it up 1-1.

To start the second period, Larry and Gould had another give and go which Larry sniped right in! The Wolves were not letting them keep the lead and soon it was tied 2-2. MacNeil was making saves on both sides and high and low to keep it tied. Gould rushed it up to the net and Ayden Hakkers shot. If at first you don’t succeed try, try again and Hakkers whipped his own rebound in! Score 3-2. Luke Zorgdrager had a sweet poke to break up a play and Ryan Middegaal was putting on the wheels to not let the Wolves set up for their continuous cycling play. Pearce had a hard shot right off the goalie’s chest. Heinbuch made a great mid ice interception. Gould won a puck battle and moved it to Cole Meadows who passed to Larry for a one timer to make it 4-2! Fans fought the urge to throw their hats onto the ice for Brame and apples to Gould for his great assists. The Warriors got their first penalty of the game and the Wolves scored coming within a goal at 4-3. Pearce had a buzzer shot off the goalie’s stick.

Middegaal shot hard on net twice to get the third period rolling. Larry and Gould continued their glory and set up Cole Meadows for a wicked goal to make it 5-3! Again the Wolves came out post goal hard and scored, 5-4. MacNeil made 3 quick saves over a minute. Danny Van Straaten did an excellent job of covering up for defence when they made a rush. Richardson took a great shot on the Wolves. There was a pile up in our net after MacNeil made 2 stick saves. Waterloo tied it up at 5-5 with 4 minutes left. We got a penalty then shortly after so did the Wolves. We had 4 on 4 for 1:30 and we dominated in scoring chances but couldn’t get that last goal. The game ended 5-5. With 2 practices between now and our next showdown, this writer is confident we’ll get those Wolves on Saturday!
