Weathering the Storm
The All Equip Peewee MD Warriors and their fans endured a long, slow bus ride through a winter storm Saturday afternoon to take on an awaiting Burlington squad.
The Warriors came out firing on all cylinders and played a complete team game. Backstopped by the strong play of Brendan Sippel between the pipes, the defensive core kept the Bulldogs off the scoresheet for the majority of the contest. Defenceman Adam Jeffrey once again stood out as a physical presence on defence.
Offensively it was Ellis Schnurr who lead the Warriors on the scoresheet with a hat trick on the road. His linemates Dylan Abel and Rowan Smith showed a lot of chemistry as their sharp passing led to numerous scoring chances. Schnurr opened the scoring in the first period on the power play with Liam Eddleston drawing the assist.. Shortly after, Schnurr finished off an excellent passing play from Abel and Smith. 2-0 Warriors after one.
Centreman Liam Ollson had a jump in his step all game and joined the scoring action in the 2nd when he took a pass from Owen Chadwick then weaved through the Burlington defence and finished with a great shot that stunned the Bulldog goaltender. 3-0 visitors.
The Warriors kept rolling and Zach Scrimgeour’s relentless forecheck led to the next 2 goals. The first, a beauty by Abel, assisted by Scrimgeour. The second was the result of a speedy Scrimgeour rush that was finished off by the excellent hand-eye coordination of Quinn Hyde as he batted the loose puck out of the air and into the back of the net. The pace of play slowed a bit in the third and the Warriors penalty killers had to go to work, killing off all 3 minor infractions in the period.
Sippel’s shutout bid was unfortunately spoiled late in the game by a scramble out front, a goal that could easily have been disallowed due to goaltender interference.
Schnurr then capped off his hat trick in the final minutes when he converted a pretty passing play by Ollson and Smith. Final score 6-1 for the travelling Warriors… made for a more enjoyable ride home in the snow.
On the down side, the Warriors lost key player Spencer Murphy to injury. Murphy was placed on the IR with a UBI.
Following a win on Sunday against Waterloo, the Warriors enter the All-Star break on a 4 game win streak.
